Bridal alterations
When Should You Book Wedding Dress Alterations? A Simple Timeline

The question I hear most from brides, usually on the phone and usually a little nervous, is “Am I too late?” Most of the time the answer is no. But there is a right time to start, and it’s earlier than a lot of people think.
Book your first wedding dress fitting about 6 weeks before the wedding. That’s how long alterations usually take from start to finish at my studio, and it gives us room to do the work properly instead of in a hurry.
Why 6 weeks?
A wedding gown isn’t a pair of pants. There are layers: lining, tulle, sometimes horsehair braid in the hem, lace that has to be moved by hand so the pattern still lines up. A bustle has to be planned around the train and the fabric. None of that is hard for me, I’ve been doing it for more than 25 years, but it can’t be rushed without the dress showing it.
Six weeks also gives your body time to settle. Many brides change a little in the last two months. Some lose weight from stress, some from planning, some just from running around. If we fit too early, we take it in twice. If we fit too late, there’s no room left for a second look.
A simple alterations timeline
Every dress is different, but this is how it usually goes:
- 3+ months out Buy your dress. If it’s ordered from a bridal shop, ask how long delivery takes. Some take longer than you’d expect.
- About 6 weeks out First fitting. You put the dress on, I pin it, and we talk about everything: the hem, the bust, the straps, the bustle, anything you’d like changed.
- 3 to 4 weeks out Second fitting. We check the work, fine-tune, and look at the dress while you move, sit and lift your arms.
- 1 to 2 weeks out Final fitting and pickup. Bring whoever will help you get dressed on the day so they can learn the bustle.
What to bring to every fitting
The shoes and the undergarments you will actually wear on the wedding day. Not similar ones. The real ones.
I know it sounds fussy. But a half-inch difference in heel height changes the hem. A different bra changes the bust and where the waist sits. If you don’t have your shoes yet, that’s fine for the first visit, just tell me, and bring them as soon as you have them.
What can be changed?
More than most brides expect. The common ones:
- Hem, including lace hems and dresses with several layers
- Taking in or letting out the bodice and side seams
- Bustle, so you can dance without stepping on your train
- Straps and sleeves: adding them, removing them, shortening them
- Cups sewn in, so you don’t have to think about a bra
Bigger changes are possible too, like reshaping a neckline or changing the skirt. Those need more time, so mention them when you book. Because I also make wedding dresses from scratch, I’m comfortable taking a gown apart and putting it back together a different way.
“My wedding is in three weeks.” Now what?
Call or text me anyway. I won’t promise what I can’t do, but I’ll look at the dress and tell you honestly what’s possible in the time we have. Sometimes it’s everything. Sometimes it’s the most important changes, done well. Rush alterations are available for an extra charge.
How much do wedding alterations cost?
Wedding alterations at my studio start at $350. The final price depends on the dress and on what it needs. A simple gown that only needs a hem and a little taking in is very different from a lace dress with three layers and a cathedral train. You’ll get a clear price at your first fitting before any work starts.
One of my brides, Leah, wrote afterward that her dress “turned out so perfect.” That’s the goal every time. Not just a dress that fits, but one you forget you’re wearing because it feels right.
